CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Stephen Colbert joked about Babydog, the English bulldog of Republican West Virginia Governor Jim Justice who is running for president, saying she would be better than independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy because “she takes her worm medicine.”

Babydog became a huge hit after performing alongside the governor and Republican U.S. Senate candidate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

Justice’s 60-pound English bulldog has been featured in articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today and many others.

During a live episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he prepared the segment on Babydog — which you can watch by clicking Here – by playing the clip in which she is brought onto the stage at Congress.

His first joke was about Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), who has been in the spotlight since The Guardian revealed in April that she wrote in her modern book about the killing of a puppy that she said exhibited aggressive behavior.

“You idiots! You can’t have a dog at the same convention as Kristi Noem,” Colbert said. “Run, girl, run! Fly! Be free! Stay away from the gravel pit.”

Next up was the “Do it for Babydog” vaccination contest. Colbert said, “It really says something about this election when a dog believes in science more than the candidates.” That’s when the talk show host mentioned that Babydog is running for president.

Colbert’s joke about deworming refers to RFK Jr.’s revelation that he suffers from a brain worm that causes mental confusion and memory loss. The New York Times reported A doctor told Kennedy that a worm in his brain that had eaten part of it and then died had caused a gloomy spot that was perceptible on brain scans.

Governor Jim Justice is the Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat from West Virginia. He defeated his challenger, Rep. Alex Mooney, with nearly 62% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

In November, he will face Wheeling Mayor and Democratic challenger Glenn Elliott. The seat is currently held by Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), who has announced he will not seek re-election in 2024.

You can watch “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on WOWK-TV Monday through Friday at 11:35 p.m.
