We all seem to know someone who can be a perfectly nice, cordial and cheerful person until the topic of politics comes up. Then that nice, cordial, cheerful person immediately turns into an evil, spiteful, arrogant, condescending pain in the you-know-what. I know a few people like that, and I know families where discussing politics is banned at family gatherings because of this issue.
And these people are almost always on the left. Democrats have a problem with arrogant condescension, and Democratic strategist Julian Epstein has a problem she calls on it.
Democratic strategist Julian Epstein said tardy this week that the political left lost the 2024 election because they are too woke and condescending to others.
Epstein made the comments during a Friday interview on Fox News as he discussed the course correction he would like to see from his party.
“We’ve talked a lot over the last year or two about what the Democrats are doing wrong. And the Democrats are kind of talking about these things in their postmortem,” he said. “They had the wrong candidate and their policies were wrong.”
He said Democrats need to “recruit better candidates and move back to the center on economic and cultural policy.”

This is called emphasizing the obvious.

But we may wonder why that is. Republicans, conservatives and libertarians are far more willing to engage in placid, rational discussion. When those of us on the right of center disagree, we tend not to take it as personally as those on the left. The answer may be found in a notable quote from the tardy great Dr. Charles Krauthammer:
Conservatives think liberals are stupid. Liberals think conservatives are evil.
For the “woke” left, the certainty of their righteousness is overwhelming. The “woke” left believes that people have a right to free healthcare and student loan forgiveness, the right to force transgender treatments on children, the right to drag queen story hours in elementary schools, and they will not consider arguments to the contrary .
This comes down to Dr. Krauthammer’s quote back. Conservatives may think liberals are stupid, but unless liberals are actually mentally impaired, they may be open to an forthright, fact-based discussion. Conservatives and libertarians, the right-of-center people, generally do not behave in an inherently rude manner because doing so would make the listener unresponsive. Conservatives tend to view civility as a virtue.
But liberals, with their knee-jerk belief that conservatives are evil, respond with arrogant condescension, and given their assumption, why shouldn’t they? Liberals view rudeness as a virtue when dealing with those they view as evil in their second year.
It’s an engaging phenomenon and explains a lot about the current state of political discourse in the United States.
Of course, too many people have an aversion to opposing views. We should do exactly the opposite: seek out these views, read or listen to them, analyze and refute them – to better engage with these inevitable discussions and lower the arrogant condescension of the woke left by a notch or two.
