Washington (Nexstar) – According to the US Veteran Ministry, around 18 veterans die of suicide every day.
Both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate Committee agree that this must change.
“We are talking about real life,” said US Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL.).
“Make these services available that our veterans need,” said US Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennes).
However, the Democrats asked the VA during a hearing on Tuesday how this could happen, as Doge’s thousands of its employees, such as those who occupy the veterans.
“This decision was reversed,” said Dr. Thomas O’Toole, the top doctor of the VA, the committee.
“After vocal protests from myself, others in this committee, in congress and all over the country,” said US senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
O’Toole said the staff was sufficient, but it can be better. Democrats argue that the return to the office amomate for the specialists of the VA specialists made it even worse.
“We have dealt with people who were on the phone in the parking lot because she did not give any confidential space for her to do her work,” said Duckworth.
“These work environments and scenarios are not acceptable for us,” said O’Toole.
The VA will soon plan a restructuring that comprises more than 80,000 jobs from the agency.
“The obligation is to ensure that direct care is provided and not affected by these cuts,” said O’Toole. “I am not familiar with the decisions and the discussions.”
The Lindsay Church, the managing director of Veterans of America minorities, only warns of DOGE’s actions on the crisis of mental health, since many veterans are also federal workers.
“You have an increasing crisis under the lower abdomen of the experienced community that we will see in the suicide report of next year,” Church told the committee.
VA Secretary Doug Collins defends the restructuring and says that hard decisions have to be made to improve overall care.
