In early October, credible reports surfaced that Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, slapped his ex-girlfriend during a public altercation in 2012. Now, after weeks of the press refusing to cover the story, he has finally been asked about it.

The claim comes from three corroborating sources who claim the ex-girlfriend told them about the assault. Emhoff reportedly became jealous during a night on the town and slapped his then-girlfriend in the face. She then tried to escape in a taxi. The next day, Emhoff reportedly didn’t apologize.

This news came on the heels of the revelation that Emhoff had committed adultery with a nanny and impregnated her. Although he has already admitted this, the press has also kept this story under wraps and refused to investigate further, including finding out what happened to the child.

All in all, Emhoff appears to have some sedate problems, and they’re the kinds of problems that would never go away if they were focused on a Republican. Appearance from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough. After no one asked Emhoff about the incident for over a week, the “Morning Joe” host technically brought it up, although the way he presented it is a lesson in shamelessness.

SCARBOROUGH: He spreads it about you, says this, tabloid stories about your personal life, says it should be front and center, he says it about your wife and makes incredibly crude and lewd suggestions about her past life. I’m just curious. I know I seem like a very centered, mindful person, but I think I’d be pissed and I’m just wondering how you all stay on task? How do you stay disciplined and not get too carried away with things like this and not fight back really challenging?

EMHOFF: We don’t have time to be livid. We don’t have time to focus on this. It’s all a distraction. It’s to try to take us out of the game

SCARBOROUGH: Does that upset you?

EMHOFF: Everything we do now, everything we talk about is this election. We understand what is significant. We understand the responsibility.

SCARBOROUGH: What’s at stake?

EMHOFF: We understand our country, our future. What kind of future will we have?

Yes, you read that correctly. Joe Scarborough reframed a question about “tabloid stories,” including the allegation that Emhoff slapped a woman, into a question about how Emhoff and Kamala Harris “stay centered.” It’s just amazing, especially coming from the same people who have insisted for years that all women must be believed, no matter the situation.

As for Emhoff’s response, he certainly didn’t deny the allegations, did he? That’s about as close to an approval as you’re going to get. Remember, this guy is a lawyer. Rest assured that he knew exactly what he was doing when he used the word “diversion” rather than just saying he didn’t do what he was accused of.

Talk about making things worse. If anything, this simply breathed modern life into the story. The Trump campaign is already making great strides, publishing posts emphasizing non-denial. No matter how challenging the mainstream press tries, people will continue to talk about it, and it’s a window into the personalities of Doug Emhoff and Kamala Harris.
