The entire nation watched as wildfires in California destroyed homes and property and claimed lives. At this point, neither Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass nor Governor Gavin Newsom can hide the fact that there has been near-criminal gross mismanagement in the Golden State for years. But could it be that people, including many Democrats, have had enough in one of the saddest states in the country? Gavin Newsom has already survived a recall election. But given the raging wildfires that could have been prevented, could he survive another one? Maybe we’ll find out.

Saving California, a newly formed bipartisan coalition of working families, professionals and community leaders, today announced the launch of a recall campaign against Governor Gavin Newsom.

A modern effort is underway to recall Newsom, who was sharply criticized for his handling of the fires. Critics of Newsom have described his leadership, or lack thereof, as a “series of disastrous failures.” Organizers of this latest recall effort say they will file paperwork in the next two weeks to begin the process of removing Newsom midway through his second term.

The recall is being led by a group called Saving California. The group describes itself as a “bipartisan coalition of working families, professionals and community leaders” and is led by talk radio host Randy Economy. In a statement Economy said:

“Under Governor Newsom’s rule, life in California has become impossible for the average citizen due to years of bad policies that have increased the cost of living, increased crime, drug use, homelessness, and increased burden costs [sic] Impacting small businesses and communities at the same time as our professional and educational standards decline, billions of taxpayer dollars for failed pet programs disappear, and our public services decline. This was most recently demonstrated by the completely unprepared and incompetent response to the fires currently ravaging the Los Angeles area.”

Economy added that the Recall plans were already in place But the ongoing wildfires “shortened our timeline and changed things.” After submitting a notice of intent, the group has five months to collect 1.3 million signatures. A spokesman for Newsom dismissed the recall attempt, saying Newsom is 100 percent focused on the fires, ongoing rescue efforts and the recovery process – not politics.

Newsom is focused on politics because he knows that’s what he’d better do as more information about the fires comes to lightweight. My colleague Jennifer Oliver O’Connell recently reported on Newsom in a White House conference call in which she complained to President Joe Biden about “misinformation” about the handling of the fires and the launch of a modern website that, interestingly, does not have the official website of the Governor’s website, but through his campaign page, which aims to combat “misinformation” about the fires.

Gavin Newsom last survived a recall in 2021. But could the untenable situation in California allow for a successful recall this time? While Saving California is a coalition from people across the political spectrum, more specifically: Could this latest Newsom disaster make California Republicans think now is the time? No one wants to get overly political while houses are burning and lives are being ruined or lost. But it must be clear to many residents that the very people who have been re-elected year after year are to blame. Do they really want the same people in charge of rebuilding? There will be some who think things would be different if they just voted for a few other Democrats. But has California really hit rock bottom this time and are enough Californians enraged enough to finally give the Republicans a look in 2026 or 2028?

Newsom’s job isn’t the only one on the chopping block. There is also a recall petition for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who celebrated with the modern president in Ghana while her city burned. The petition currently has around 130,000 signatures.

Californians may finally have had enough of Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass messing around while LA burns.
