New York (AP) – The former US representative Nita Lowey, a long -time New York Democrat who was the first woman who led the mighty committee for home appliances in the home attack. She was 87.
Lowey’s family said in a statement by the Democratic Committee of West Chestian County that she died on Saturday after fighting her career for women, children and families “with the” same persistence and strength that she had fought during her 32-year career.
The family said she died peacefully in her house in Harrison, New York, surrounded by her husband, her children and grandchildren. Governor Kathy Hochul, a democrat who served in the congress with Lowey, ordered flags on the semi -rod in honor of her former colleague.
“As a public servant, she was led by the Jewish core of ‘Tikkun Olam’ who repaired the world,” was the family’s explanation. “She was a tireless fighter and worked over the aisle to provide results for her voters and all Americans.”
Lowey represented suburban communities north of New York City, including parts of the West Chestian County and the Hudson River Valley.
It was elected to the congress in 1988 and served until she decided to retire instead of choosing her again in 2020.
In her decades in the house, Lowey urged federal financing to combat AIDS and economic aid for developing countries.
It supported initiatives for the health and education of women and in particular led a successful struggle for the contraception of federal workers by their federal health insurance plans in the overdue 1990s as part of the house controlled by Republicans.
“To be honest, to have a job that I love so much, this made this a very difficult choice,” said Lowey, who became chairman of the House Appropriations Committee in 2018, the Associated Press to retire. “But I just had the feeling that it was time.”
The US representative of Connecticut, Rosa Delauro, now the ranking democrat in the appropriation committee, recalled on Sunday as a “violent negotiator and loyal civil servant”, who was “brave, humorous and persistent, which even illuminated the darkest rooms”.
She said Lowey was a tireless lawyer for a number of critical topics, health care and the environment to programs after school and public broadcasting.
The US MP Mike Lawler, a Republican who now represents Lowey’s congress district, praised her “cross -party spirit, commitment to our community and the commitment to the country”.
Ken Jenkins, Executive by West Chestian County, said Lowey had “integrity, honesty and the values of the good government” and said that she was a “mentor, a friend and always a beacon of hope”.
According to Lowey’s family, a private funeral and funeral from a memorial service follow at a later date.
“We will miss them more than to say words and be able to comfort themselves that they led a full and targeted life,” the explanation said.
