In the third straight general election, West Virginia residents overwhelmingly voted for former President Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy, securing him the state’s four electoral votes, according to unofficial election results. The Associated Press called the Trump race in West Virginia as soon as the polls closed Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
As of 11:46 p.m. Tuesday, with 92% of votes counted, Trump had received 70.1% of votes cast in West Virginia, compared to Vice President Kamala Harris’ 28% of votes.
Support for Trump across the Mountain State is not recent; Residents overwhelmingly supported him in both the 2016 and 2020 general elections, with about 69% of voters supporting him in both years. In comparison, 26% of voters chose Hillary Clinton in 2016 and the nearly 30% of voters who supported President Joe Biden in 2020.
Although the former president did not stop in West Virginia during the 2024 general election, his presence was known. Gov. Jim Justice — who has done little to no campaigning for his own Republican Senate race in West Virginia — campaigned for Trump at rallies in several swing states, urging voters to support him. And in West Virginia, Republican candidates at almost every level have used Trump’s support, image and attitude to win votes by calling themselves “Trump Republicans.”
