I have already requested a briefing from the Secret Service and am also requesting a hearing from Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. The Oversight Committee will send out a formal invitation shortly.
He also directly addressed the “political violence” that the shooting represents, condemning it as “un-American [sic] and unacceptable,” while sending his prayers to both Trump and the families of the victims. One person was reportedly killed and another injured. The shooter was killed at the scene.
Comer also thanked the Secret Service agents who immediately jumped into action to save the former president’s life:
My prayers are with President Trump and the victims of the assassination attempt at today’s rally in Pennsylvania. I thank the brave members of the Secret Service who risked their lives to protect President Trump and the American patriots in the audience who helped others who were injured. Political violence in any form is un-American. [sic] and unacceptable.
The congressman from the Bluegrass state concluded with a sentence that will likely resonate with many at this hour: “There are many questions and the American people demand answers.”
UPDATE: Cheatle has been summoned to testify on Monday, July 22.
