LEWISBURG – The Greenbrier is up for auction again.

A resort owned by Gov. Jim Justice’s family will be put up for sale Oct. 25 at the front door of the Greenbrier County Courthouse, according to a legal notice published in the West Virginia Daily News in Lewisburg.

This is just 11 days before the election in which the Republican judge is the leading candidate for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin (IW.Va.).

The legal notice states that the highest bidder must pay in cash on the day of sale.

The foreclosed 60.5-acre property does not include the entire Greenbrier convoluted. It basically includes a world celebrated hotel and parking lot. The rest of the properties – including golf courses, tennis and medical facilities – are owned by other entities in the justice system.

The property was scheduled to be auctioned this summer due to a default on a loan from JPMorgan Chase. However, weeks before the auction, the bank sold the deed of trust to McCormick 101, a debt collection company affiliated with the Beltway Capitol.

Greenbrier then said it had reached an agreement to halt the sale.

“Beltway Capital will receive a specified amount, which is due in full by October 24, 2024, and Justice has already secured this financing,” the company said at the time. “The Beltway reserves its rights if the Justice family fails to fulfill its obligations. Once fully implemented, all matters relating to Greenbrier and Glade Springs will be completed.

An attorney representing Greenbrier claims that the company will make the final payment before October 24, thus canceling the planned auction.

“As previously announced by The Greenbrier, its agreement with Beltway Capital calls for final payment to be made by October 24, 2024.” – Steve Ruby said in a statement to West Virginia record. “Greenbrier remains on track to make this payment.

“Today’s announcement is merely a procedural matter. This in no way reflects any change in the parties’ relationship or The Greenbrier’s payment plans,” Ruby said on behalf of The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation.

In financial disclosures for his latest campaign, Justice lists personal debt to McCormick 101 at between $25 million and $50 million. Beltway Capital is the loan servicer for McCormick 101 and they both have the same address. The Beltway Company demanded the outstanding amount of the loan, which was $24 million in principal and $16 million in interest.

In other Justice financial news, thousands of acres of the family’s properties in Greenbrier and Monroe counties are up for sale.

Bellwood Corporation, another Justice company, is selling the land at an auction on Nov. 7 in Lewisburg. The area of 3,377 acres is spread over 21 tracts of land. Most of the land is in Monroe County. Wolz & Associates is handling the sale.

Justice, a two-term governor, is running for the U.S. Senate. Democrat Glenn Elliott, the mayor of Wheeling, and Libertarian David Moran, a retired engineer who ran a sheep and alpaca farm in Preston County, are the other candidates on the Nov. 5 ballot.
