The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, commonly known as the Al Smith Dinner, is an annual white tie Event in New York City to raise funds for Catholic Charities who support children with different needs in the Archdiocese of New York.
Held in the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel On the third Thursday in October, the dinner will be hosted by the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation in honor of Al Smithwho grew up in poverty and later became Governor of New York four times and was the first Catholic to be nominated as a presidential candidate by a major party. Traditionally, during each presidential campaign, the Republican and Democratic candidates meet to deliver amusing speeches at the dinner. Exceptions were made in 1996, 2000 and 2004, when the foundation decided not to invite presidential candidates. The tradition began when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon attended the event in 1960.
The last time a Democratic candidate did not attend the event while a Republican candidate was present was in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan gave a speech without Walter Mondale in attendance.
The tradition is broken this year.
Kamala Harris will not attend the dinner but will instead campaign in an unspecified swing state. Spokesman of the Archdiocese Joseph Zwilling said he hopes Harris will change her mind.
We are disappointed that she will not be with us because this evening is one of unity and of putting aside political differences for the sake of a good cause, which is to support women and children in need, regardless of their race, creed or origin. We hope she will reconsider.
