Harris concedes as President-elect Trump begins transition

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The transition of power in Washington is about to happen.

President-elect Donald Trump has retaken the White House and Vice President Kamala Harris conceded the race.

President-elect Donald Trump is receiving congratulations from world leaders, his opponent and President Biden, who will address the nation Thursday morning.

“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted,” Harris said.

In a concession speech on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris urged her supporters to continue the fight while acknowledging a peaceful transition of power.

“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that is driving this campaign,” Harris said.

Harris’ comments came after President-elect Trump won swing states and was declared the winner early Wednesday.

“This is a movement like no one has ever seen before,” Trump said.

The Trump campaign says he and Harris spoke in a phone call in which she congratulated him and he praised her quote of “strength, professionalism and tenacity.”

Republicans also regained control of the Senate with victories in Montana, Ohio and West Virginia.

Outgoing Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell took a victory lap.

“And I think we had the best candidates everywhere yesterday,” McConnell said.

The balance of power in the House of Representatives remains uncertain.

Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries expresses hope, writing on X: “The House remains very much in play.”

President Joe Biden’s comments later on Thursday came after he invited President-elect Trump to a meeting at the White House to ensure a velvety transition.
