CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Donald Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States early Wednesday morning, marking the second time a president has served non-consecutive terms.

The Associated Press called the national race around 4:30 a.m., with a win in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that gave him the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential race against Democratic challenger Vice President Kamala Harris.

The race was called immediately after polls closed in West Virginia at 7:30 p.m. This call came along with other states considered sheltered for their parties, such as Indiana and Kentucky for Trump and Vermont for Harris.

The majority of people in every West Virginia county voted for Trump, with some seeing more than 80% of their votes go to the Republican candidate, according to the secretary of state’s website.

It was slightly tighter in the state’s three largest counties, according to the secretary of state’s website. In Kanawha County, Trump won 57.69% of the vote; at Cabell, Trump won 59.99%; and in Monongalia, Trump won 50.88% to Harris’ 46.46%.

Republicans won many of West Virginia’s key elections, including Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who defeated Huntington Mayor Steve Williams for governor, and Gov. Jim Justice, who flipped a U.S. Senate seat currently held by Senator Joe Manchin (I) is held.

This seat had been held by Democrats since the 1950s, when Robert C. Byrd was elected in 1958. Senator Byrd died in office in 2010, and then-Gov. Joe Manchin would fill his seat with Senator Carte Goodwin (D). He served until Manchin was elected to the Senate that same year.
