CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – In a major victory for Republicans, Gov. Jim Justice beat Democratic challenger and Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott for a U.S. Senate seat, leaving the seat to Republicans for the first time since the 1950s.

The Associated Press called the race for governor just minutes after polls closed at 7:30 p.m. As of Wednesday, 89% of the vote had 68.9% of the total, Elliott had 27.61% and Libertarian candidate David Moran had 3.49%.

This seat had been held by Democrats since the 1950s, when Robert C. Byrd was elected in 1958. Senator Byrd died in office in 2010, and then-Gov. Joe Manchin would fill his seat with Senator Carte Goodwin (D). He served until Manchin was elected to the Senate that same year. Manchin announced in 2023 that he would not seek re-election to the U.S. Senate.

Republicans dominated the state of West Virginia, with the gubernatorial and presidential elections almost immediately called for Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and Donald Trump, respectively.
