There are times when one cannot be sure of the impact of a particular event related to an election. All too often we don’t know what impact this will have until the votes are counted. But this one has the potential to be a pretty massive deal.

On Saturday, a group of Minneapolis community leaders expressed some very enthusiastic endorsements and support for Donald Trump for president. Why is this significant? Because the advocates come from Muslims The Somali community in Minneapolis.

Some essential quotes:

Most importantly, the left has abandoned us. 33 percent of our children can’t read – can’t read in class. Minnesota in education? We are failing in every way. Eighth graders – 60 percent cannot do math at grade level. These are our children. We are talking about economic conditions here. Our conditions are terrible. We can’t afford anything. As working and middle class people. Please understand: We love our brothers and sisters who are Democrats, but you have abandoned us. And because the left has abandoned us, join the right and vote for Trump, 2024.

Another community leader, a former Democrat, also made powerful comments:

I am a person with deep Muslim faith. I have an Abrahamic religion. I love my Jewish brothers and sisters. I love my Christian brothers and sisters. People come from different communities and backgrounds. We are all the same. We live in a country where we should work together. Don’t hurt each other, don’t defame each other. We should protect everyone’s right to speak. Because if I support the censorship of one part of this country today, guess what, tomorrow I will be censored too. And I don’t want that for myself or my family. And that’s why it’s surprising that Trump is something of an asshole. He says a lot of things, he’s not the nicest person in the room, he won’t sugarcoat things. But guess what, nothing happened to me personally in the four years he was president. I was safe and sound, this community was safe and sound. This country was safe and sound.

This is a unifying message.

It’s not clear what massive impact this will have on Minnesota or the election as a whole. At this point, it’s a bit of a stretch to say Minnesota is in play; The RealClearPolitics state average puts Kamala Harris ahead at 4.8 percent, in a state that last sent its electoral votes to a Republican in 1972. And while these recommendations are meaningful and undoubtedly heartfelt, it is the same community that sent Ilhan Omar to Congress three times in a row.

But it can be part of a larger whole. Most Muslims are very conservative on social issues; Transgender activism, gender theory, climate change and other sacred cows of today’s Democratic Party do not sit well with many Muslims. On the other hand, the United States’ continued support for Israel is also a contentious issue among many in the Muslim community.

It’s an engaging needle that the GOP may have to thread over time.
