State Senator Mark Hunt will be the state’s next comptroller.
The Associated Press called the race for Hunt, a Republican who represents Kanawha County, against Democratic opponent Mary Ann Claytor at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday. At that point, Hunt had 68% of the vote compared to Claytor’s 32%, with unofficial results showing 49% of votes counted.
Hunt is an attorney in Charleston. He was elected to the state Senate in 2022.
According to her campaign website, Claytor worked in the state auditor’s office for 22 years and is a “successful small business owner specializing in government accounting.”
Hunt previously served in the state House of Representatives for ten years starting in 1994. according to his office biography.
Hunt replaces JB McCuskey, who was elected attorney general on Tuesday.
According to the Secretary of State, Hunt raised $64,000 for the election cycle, more than double Claytor’s $30,000.
In the May primary, Hunt won the Republican nomination for comptroller, defeating House Majority Leader Eric Householder, R-Berkeley, former Rep. Caleb Hanna and former Jefferson County Commissioner Tricia Jackson.
