Indiana takes a first – and long – shot on the acquisition of parts of Illinois

Indiana takes a first step to acquire parts of Illinois, although a last step appears quite unlikely.

The legislature of Indiana this week gave a final approval for a draft law that would create the border adaptation commission of Indiana Illinois to recommend whether the border between the two countries should be changed. The move comes because the residents of some counties in Illinois try to separate from the Chicago region.

The Republican Indiana Governor Mike Braun plans to sign the measure in the law, said spokesman Griffin Reid on Friday. Braun will then face a deadline on September 1st to plan the first meeting of the Commission.

But there is a trailer coupling.

A change in the state limits would also require approval by Illinois and the US Congress. And Illinois’ first -class officials don’t like the idea.

A companion who authorizes Illinois to participate in the border adjustment commission has not yet received a hearing in a house committee in Illinois. At the beginning of this year, the democratic Illinois governor JB Pritzker described Indiana’s legislation as “one stunt”.

Smaller border changes between states are not unusual; According to the national center for intergovernmental compacts of the Council of State Governments, there were at least 50 in the entire US history. However, no major changes have taken place since the era of the civil war than some counties in Virginia had the opportunity to form West Virginia.

The current movement in which Illinois and Indiana are involved is based on political and urban rural departments. Democrats dominate the Chicago region and thus also control the state government, while the Republicans represent many other parts of Illinois. Republicans also control the government of Indiana.

In the past five years, voters have approved in 33 counties of Illinois ballot papers in which they were asked whether they would like to consider Chicagos Cook County to form a fresh state. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you would connect to Indiana if you gave the chance.

A similar movement is in progress in the east of Oregon, where some counties want to dissolve from their democratically guided state and want to connect Idaho led by Republicans. The Idaho house adopted a measure two years ago in which Oregon was invited to enter into discussions. However, similar measures remain buried in Oregon’s legislation.
