I lost my 92 -year -old mother in the last month after a long illness.

My mother died peacefully in her house in the ports, a facility for assisted living, in which she lived a little more than the last five years of her life. I helped her to make the transition from her home to the ports in December 2019 immediately before the emergency of Covid, who changed life in America forever.

At first, my mother was persuaded by the 24-hour access to personalized nursing services. Before moving, she began to experience episodes of uncontrollable blood pressure tips, which she ended up in the emergency room in the middle of the night. She lived alone and was afraid and vulnerable. The personalized care on site that my mother received from the ports clearly expanded her life and quality. The nursing staff was able to monitor and control their blood pressure and to eliminate visits to the emergency room.

Thanks to the life situation and the options available to her, she was able to share more time with me and her granddaughter.

Unfortunately, the majority of West Virginians cannot get access to such care. My mother had to take out long-term long-term long-term care insurance over 20 years. She watched her mother and siblings’ health crises and did not want to experience the same fate.

Today, 76% of the residents of nursing homes in West Virginia from Medicaid are covered: that is over 49,000 inhabitants in just one state. Medicare favored people rely on Medicaid for the support in services that are not covered by Medicare, especially long -term care.

There is an unprecedented and unnecessary attack on one of the country’s largest health insurance programs. The GOP is planning to rip Medicaid from our seniors – and any other person supported by Medicaid in the current budget process. According to the current proposal, West Virginia loses more than half a billion federal money. And a few weeks ago we all saw how eager the Republicans in West Virginia are to throw tens of thousands of their voters under the bus when the congress cuts the program. They didn’t even wait for their congress delegation. They have moved them up by trying to sneak into a Medicaid trigger bill that signaled the message: Hey, it’s okay, it doesn’t matter whether they earn Medicaid. We are ready and ready.

The only thing she stopped was she and all of us. They answered. We appeared. We all said no. And it was not with a whisper, but with a concerted voice: hands of our health care.

Life according to the GOP is that you have yours – we are alone to find out how we can pay for health care, regardless of our age, weaknesses or circumstances.

Do you have a mother or father or a grandparent who will soon need a life or qualified nursing? The average costs for assisted life in West Virginia are 5,500 USD per month. The average costs of a semi -private space in a qualified care facility in West Virginia are $ 11,619 per month.

Medicaid helps for many of these costs. Medicaid offers health care for over 70 million Americans, including 7.2 million Seniors. It offers significant coverage for expenses such as long -term care, medical devices, hospital stays and prescription medication. As the largest payers for long -term care services in the country, the middle -class families are dependent on Medicaid to take care of their relatives. Six to 10 Residents of the nursing home count on medicaid for long-term care they exploit 5.6 million Older Americans.

West Virginians For affordable health care, legislators call for the best interests of its residents of West Virginia. We ask you to protect our health care and reject another tax cut that only benefits billionaires.
