On Thursday evening, Democrats overwhelmingly voted against the second attempt at a continuing resolution (CR) aimed at funding the government and preventing a shutdown. The CR, supported by President-elect Donald Trump, included a provision to suspend the debt ceiling until 2027. While the proposal was supported by the majority of Republicans, a few dozen members of the party and Democrats opposed it.

As America continues its budget battle, other questions have emerged: Who is this purple-haired woman screaming “President Elon Musk”?

Videos of a passionate Democratic MP circulated online. The woman is 81-year-old Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a representative from Connecticut who has haunted the halls of power in Washington since 1991.

And guess what? They were scared because President Musk told them, “Don’t do it.” Don’t do it. Shut down the government!’ Introduce. What does he know about what people go through when the government shuts down? Are his employees furloughed? Hell no! Is he on leave? NO!

And if you shut down the government, people don’t get paid, and if perhaps none of us were paid if the government shut down, maybe some people on the other side of the aisle would think differently about where we’re going with this effort. We had an agreement.

But you know this is not the case. This is no different than what we have experienced over the last year and a half or so. Think about it: If the Biden-McCarthy deal goes through, you walk away the next day. Johnson-Schumer deal, gone next day. And now they are walking away from this deal.

Who do we trust on this board? And most importantly, can the American people trust us? Trust us with your life? When we had a moment where we agreed as Democrats and Republicans, and then we were able to say, let’s move forward.

DeLauro has been a member of the House Appropriations Committee, one of the most powerful bodies in Congress, since 1993. Currently she is Ranking member of the committee after previously acts as chairman. DeLauro won a three-way race for the seat in 2020, giving her significant influence over the federal budget.

The progressive legislator is also the Ranking member having previously served as Chairman of the subcommittee on work, health and social services and education. Additionally, she served as co-chair of the House Democratic Steering Committee from 2003 to 2021.

The circulating social media posts caught the attention of Kim Kavin, co-founder of Fight For Freelancers. Last year, Kavin testified before the House Worker Protection Subcommittee to speak out against proposed federal regulations that could misclassify and harm millions of independent contractors. Kavin points out DeLauro’s role in the introduction Worker Flexibility and Small Business Protection Act of 2020which adversely affects freelance and independent contract workers who are subject to the same criteria as California’s disastrous AB5 law.

Trump tells Democrats: ‘You voted for a shutdown, you’re going to get a shutdown’

She wrote about DeLauro on social media:

Some of the lawmakers currently shouting loudest about federal workers not being paid during a government shutdown are the same people who have been trying to destroy the income and careers of legitimate independent contractors across the country for years. Rosa DeLauro proudly tried to replicate California’s terrible failure to pass an anti-freelance law across the country.

DeLauro’s long tenure in Congress is another example of the need for term limits for elected officials. In more than three decades, purple-striped jazz maven DeLauro has amassed considerable power for her progressive causes in her decades-long rise to influence. DeLauro may seem like another fiery Democrat at first glance, but she is one of the most entrenched figures in Congress.
