CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin announced today that he has registered as an Independent.

According to a press release, Manchin registered at the West Virginia State Capitol.

“Since my first day in public service in 1982, I have always been focused on doing what is best for my state and my country, without regard to party or politics,” Manchin said in his press release. “Throughout my time in elected office, I have always prided myself on my commitment to common sense, bipartisanship and my desire to bring people together. That is who I am. That is who I will always be. I have never viewed America through a partisan lens.”

He continued, “However, since becoming a U.S. Senator in 2010, I have seen both the Democratic and Republican parties abandon West Virginia and our country in favor of partisan extremism, putting our democracy at risk. Today, our national politics is broken, and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground. To stay true to myself and continue to put my country before party, I have decided to register as an independent, nonpartisan candidate and continue to fight for America’s reasonable majority.”

This is a developing story and we will provide novel information as it becomes available.
