Liz Cheney threatened Donald Trump’s recent Justice Department on Monday, claiming that any investigation by the now-disbanded Jan. 6 committee would be “sanctionable conduct.” The statement, issued in response to Trump’s recent “Meet the Press” interview, also rejected allegations that she and her colleagues destroyed evidence.

In conversation with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, the President-elect said the following.

“Cheney did something that is inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the unelected committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” the president-elect said, referring to Mississippi Rep. Bennie G. Thompson ( the chairman of the committee). . “They deleted and destroyed all evidence.”

That prompted Cheney to lash out and declare that Trump had committed the “worst violation of our Constitution by a president in the history of our country.”

“Here is the truth: Donald Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election and seize power,” she said in a statement. “He mobilized an angry mob and sent them to the United States Capitol, where he attacked police officers, broke into the building and stopped the official counting of electoral votes. Trump watched on television as police officers were brutally beaten and the Capitol was attacked, and for hours refused to order the mob to leave the Capitol.”

She continued: “This was the worst violation of our Constitution by a president in our country’s history. “Donald Trump’s proposal to jail members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions is a continuation of his attack on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.”

Reading about this by-election makes it all the more pathetic. There are Despite it No evidence has ever been presented that Donald Trump intended anyone to physically attack the Capitol. It is also simply wrong that he refused to ask the “mob to leave” for hours. Trump did not attempt to “seize power” and there is evidence that he requested the presence of National Guard troops but was rebuffed.

How do we know this? Because the committee received testimony on January 6th that corroborates the claim. Of course, Cheney and her colleagues covered it up and refused to include it in their hearings or reports. The statement was not released until March 2024. A month later, three National Guard officers came forward as whistleblowers to tell the same story.

As for Trump’s claim that evidence was “deleted and destroyed,” that is what happened.

Faced with this reality, Cheney threatened the recent Trump administration.

“Donald Trump knows that his claims about the select committee are ridiculous and false, as has been detailed, including by Chairman Thompson,” she said. “There is no adequate factual or constitutional basis for what Donald Trump is proposing – a Justice Department investigation into the work of a congressional committee – and any lawyer attempting to pursue this path would quickly find themselves implicated in sanctionable conduct. “

I’m not sure how this would work exactly. It appears that Cheney is suggesting that Congress could sanction the DOJ as a matter of separation of powers. I’m skeptical that would ever happen, especially given the current Republican majority, however miniature. Or perhaps she thinks that the justice system will intervene and comply with her wishes? Whatever it is, Cheney’s threat shows how he or she views the rule of law. While she constantly complains about it, she doesn’t believe it applies to herself.

Regardless, clinging to Trump’s mention of “all the evidence” when he was clearly being general is pedantic nonsense. The January 6 committee deleted some They also hid a lot more of it in order to influence the public’s view of the situation for political reasons. These are undeniable facts, no matter how strenuous Cheney tries to cloud the facts.

Your threats are toothless. The Trump DOJ should Investigate what happened to the January 6 committee. The aim was to find out how much evidence had been manipulated and destroyed, which was clearly an abuse of power and a waste of taxpayers’ money. This is what people voted for in November. They did not vote for the status quo. They voted for change and accountability. Cheney, who campaigned with Kamala Harris, is fine with it and seething about it.
