CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The West Virginia primary election set the stage for a battle between Steve Williams and Patrick Morrisey for governor. But less than a week later, there was a report this weekend that U.S. Senator Joe Manchin was still considering entering the race and even replacing Williams on the ticket.

Even though the primaries are over, there are mechanisms in place that could have made this possible. However, gubernatorial candidate and Huntington Mayor Williams spoke to WOWK 13 News and says there is no truth to this plan. He had even just gotten off the phone with Manchin before speaking to us.

“Joe and I have met several times since Election Day and when I first heard it it wasn’t something I was worried about, but this is a political matter and that’s just how it works,” Williams said.

As for Manchin, WOWK 13 News has reached out to his team for comment, but so far we have heard no word on his plans when his term in the U.S. Senate ends in January.
