CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – History was made in Charleston Thursday morning as Natalie Tennant was sworn into the Kanawha County Commission.
Tennant, who defeated Republican candidate Chris Walters in November, was the first woman in Kanawha County’s 236-year history to serve on the commission. Tennant’s fellow commissioners Ben Salango and Lance Wheeler, Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin and Capitol High School VIPs welcomed her to her recent role.
“Today is the day I will be sworn in as county commissioner. It’s like we’ve been working on this for almost a year and today is the day that I can really work on innovative ideas. You know, I use my energy and enthusiasm to bring different groups together. And that’s what I’m happy about today,” Tennant said.
Tennant previously served as West Virginia’s secretary of state from 2009 to 2017. She was the third woman to serve as Secretary of State and the second elected to the office. She was also the first female mountaineering mascot in the 1990s.
