North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson has been in the news a lot in recent weeks due to salacious allegations published by CNN, a wave of office/campaign staffers resignationsa freak accident during an election campaign, stop it caused a brief hospital stay and the Hurricane Helene relief effort that he personally organized after the federal government was ponderous to respond.
Opinions about Robinson vary widely in these parts, especially after the CNN story – which Robinson denies – first broke.
However, most people will probably agree that a recent ad run by the Democratic candidate in the race to replace him was a huge strategic mistake that could cost them some much-needed votes on Election Day.

Robinson, of course, is the Republican candidate for governor, with the lieutenant governor position still up for grabs this election cycle. The two nominees in that race are Republican Hal Weatherman, former Gov. Dan Forest’s chief of staff, and Democrat Rachel Hunt, a state senator and daughter of former longtime Gov. Jim Hunt.
Rachel Hunt’s latest campaign ad, out this week, ominously (and falsely) portrays Weatherman as “worse” than Robinson and includes the predictable attempts to make Weatherman seem “extreme” on issues like abortion. But look at what happens at the end of the ad when she reaches into a janitor’s closet and pulls out a mop, a bucket and some hydrogen peroxide.
“As lieutenant governor, I will address extremism in state government. And since I’m moving into Mark Robinson’s office, I’m going to start with a gallon of this,” she says, showing off the mop in one hand and the gallon of hydrogen peroxide in the other, smiling.
Regard:
It didn’t take long for Weatherman to utilize the left’s own tactics against them:
He wasn’t the only one:
Your rules, right?
Not surprisingly, Robinson had done this a lot to say also about this:
It must be beyond embarrassing for Jim Hunt to see this commercial airing on North Carolina’s airwaves.
Imagine how he feels when he sees his daughter not only slinging mud at her opponent, but outright lying to the people of North Carolina.
Will the news media report that a white liberal just released an ad claiming she needs bleach to pristine out the office of this state’s first black lieutenant governor?
I suspect not.
Hunt’s campaign also spent a pretty penny on it:
While Robinson’s Democratic opponent, Attorney General Josh Stein, is doing well in advance There haven’t been many polls in the lieutenant governor race, with the few out there showing Hunt and Weatherman going back and forth with tiny notes and names recognition problems.
In any case, in a state known in part for its infamous history of racially-tinged ads run by both major parties, it will be captivating to see whether this ultimately hurts Hunt in November. And just to be clear, it is not uncommon for governors and lieutenant governors from different parties to hold office at the same time.
As always, stay tuned.
