On Thursday, the California Supreme Court sided with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) and the Democratic legislature, ruling that tax increases or novel tax measures will not be decided by voters. Instead, they will be decided by bureaucrats.

As RedState’s Jennifer Van Laar reported, California residents had the opportunity to decide whether California bureaucrats should raise taxes, but because of the influence of Newsom and Democratic leaders, they managed to defy democracy and do what they wanted.

Yet all we have heard from Newsom and members of the legislature is that MAGA and “extremist Republicans” are “dangerous” and “a threat to democracy.”

Newsom’s term as governor is scheduled to end in 2026, meaning he will likely run for president in 2028. While he will tout “democracy,” this ruling opens the door for Democrats like Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) and Jared Polis (D-CO), as well as other 2028 presidential candidates, to seek to differentiate themselves from the California governor.

Many consider California to be the most stunning state in America. To this day, California is the most populous state. However, due to one-party rule in the California Assembly and Newsom’s incompetence, California is not living up to its potential.

California leads the nation in terms of homelessness. In 2023, the state accounted for nearly 30 percent of all homeless people in America, in part because they facilitate homelessness in the state and also invite homeless people from other states.

Homelessness has worsened under Newsom when he was mayor of San Francisco and now governor of California. Crime is out of controlDrugs on the streets, the border crisis has arrived in San Diego, while Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) seals off the Texas border and Newsom simply watches the illegals come into California. The state is facing a record $73 billion deficit, after having a record $97 billion surplus less than two years ago.

His future Democratic presidential opponents already had plenty of ammunition against Newsom and his record. Denying Californians the opportunity to vote on tax increases only strengthens their position. Claiming he “stands up for democracy” will seem foolish when he denies his own voters that very principle.

But see: Counterargument: Democrats should say:
“Help me, Gavin Newsom, you are my only hope”

It should be a scandal to Democrats, independents and Republicans alike that bureaucrats think they can decide for the voters what is right for the voters and the state. In the long run, this will backfire on them if they ever want to advance to bigger and better things in their political careers.

Newsom’s actual attack on democracy could be the nail in the coffin for his hopes of becoming president. If he decides to run for president and ultimately loses, it will end Newsom’s long career as a politician.
