WASHINGTON – Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was injured and hospitalized while on an official trip to Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, her office said Friday.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals,” Speaker Ian Krager wrote in a statement.
“She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remaining CODEL events to honor the courage of our service members during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our country’s history,” Krager wrote, using the Abbreviation for congressional delegation, the name for a business trip.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and her gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.”
Krager wrote in the statement that Pelosi was “taken to the hospital for evaluation” following an “injury.” He did not provide any further details.
Pelosi, 84, was sworn in as a member of Congress in June 1987 and rose through the ranks to become the first woman in the country’s history to hold the gavel.
House Democrats elected Pelosi speaker in 2007, and she remained the party’s top member of the House until January 2023, when Democratic New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries became minority leader after being elected by Democrats.
After retiring from leadership at the start of this Congress, she assumed the title of Speaker Emeritus.
Pelosi represents California 11th Congressional Districtwhich covers parts of San Francisco.
In the November election, voters in Pelosi’s district re-elected her to serve another two-year term in Congress. She secured 81% of the vote in the heavily Democratic district ahead of a Republican challenger.
Pelosi’s undisclosed injury came just days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., fell in the US Capitol, He suffered an injury to his wrist and a compact cut to his face.
