The New Year is just a few days away and at this time of year it is common to not only look back on the past year, but also look forward to the fresh year to come. A CBS/YouGov poll on the topic released Sunday by CBS News shows that Americans are generally more sanguine about 2025 than they were about 2024 at the same time last year.

Can you blame us?

Looking ahead to 2025, Americans are more confident than discouraged — and even more confident than they were at the start of 2024. Last year was more mixed.

It looks like this very political past year is influencing the larger outlook for next year.

Among those who say they are generally sanguine about 2025, their main reason is that Donald Trump becomes president.

His impending presidency is an even more crucial factor keeping them hopeful for 2025 than their prospects for their own personal relationships and finances.

Now there’s a catch. There’s always a catch. While the poll found 57 percent of respondents were “hopeful,” compared to 47 percent last year, it’s captivating to look at the responses when you add in party affiliation. Sixty percent of respondents who answered they were “hopeful” said that “Trump’s presidential run” was one of the reasons they were hopeful, while 85 percent who answered they were “discouraged” also cited Trump’s presidential run .

My goodness, who didn’t see that coming?

Now, 85 percent of Republicans, 49 percent of independents and just 38 percent of Democrats were among those who responded that they were “hopeful.” Frankly, given the wailing and gnashing of teeth from Democrats these days, it’s astonishing that 38 percent of Democrats are “hopeful.” In fact, one wonders if these are the same people pushing Kamala Harris to run for president again in 2028.

If so, we should encourage them; Then we could be even more sanguine when we look to 2029.

Oh, and Joe Biden? In this poll, his approval rating is falling rapidly: 39 percent approve of his job as president and 61 percent disapprove – which tells me that 39 percent of respondents have apparently been living in a cave somewhere in Outer Mongolia for four years.

Oh, and there’s another question about people’s most common New Year’s resolutions. Honestly, who cares? If you have to decide to do something you wouldn’t have done otherwise, you probably still won’t do it. So let’s give up the whole “New Year’s resolution” thing.

It can be fun to pick apart surveys like this. But most of the time – as in this case – they don’t reveal any really useful information.
