Every election season, theft and vandalism of campaign signs inevitably occurs, whether the signs are defaced/destroyed or stolen and discarded. The year 2024 was no exception to this rule, with reports of sign shenanigans occurring almost weekly here in North Carolina alone.

In one example, there was Lowell Simon, the Democratic candidate for State House District 78 and chairman of the Moore County Democratic Party, who recently resigned from his post after he was caught taking down signs for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the GOP candidate in the gubernatorial race.

Although Moore apologized After he was arrested and charged, he said he did it because Republican signs were allegedly “illegally” posted near signs for Democratic candidates, and he had every intention of sending them to the local GOP office to return.

Another case that has drawn attention involves an alleged sign theft in the Democratic stronghold of Wake County.

According to a report by independent journalist Stephen Horn on This Week in the Triangle, a man and someone who appeared to be an Asian American woman were seen holding Trump signs at an intersection near one Early voting location at a senior center. A person we’ve learned is either a former or current student who saw the video claims the man is NC State professor David Ambaras, whose major is in Japanese, according to his university profile History lies.

Per Horn, another man seen in the video trying to stop what was happening, was later shown a picture of Ambaras and said he was “99 percent sure” that was what happened the same person:

According to the passerby who was caught confronting the couple (who is referred to as “Joe” due to his desire to avoid future harassment), their excuse for removing the pro-Trump signs was that they ” “damaged”.

The video shows that two of the signs the couple was holding were vandalized with black spray paint, in a manner apparently consistent with Trump signs previously vandalized in the same location last week; However, the other signs held by the couple appear to be undamaged.

After the confrontation, the video shows the couple putting down the signs and one of the signs reading “Trump Low Taxes | Kamala High Taxes” back into the ground, only to pick up the remaining signs and walk away from them.

Here is the video clip:

Horn posted more information about Ambaras on the Twitter/X machine, along with receipts proving his extreme TDS:

David Ambaras has called Trump a “super-fascist” and called his supporters “bad people” on social media.

Ambaras has taught at the university for more than 25 years and first came to prominence in a viral video shared by @LibsOfTiktok from one of his current/former students

I contacted Ambaras by phone but received no response

Whether he’s the sign thief or not, this guy has some grave problems. However, professors – just like students – have a right to freedom of expression. I just hope Ambaras’ belief that Trump supporters are “bad people” who should be banned from the platform (if these screenshots are any reliable indicator) isn’t a belief system that’s brought into the classroom and handed out .
