After Joe Biden dropped out of the race for the 2024 presidential nomination just weeks before the Democratic Party Convention, many Republicans, including Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (Louisiana), have either suggested or strongly insinuated that this was nothing less than some kind of palace revolt.
“By invalidating the votes of more than 14 million Americans who voted for Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, the self-proclaimed ‘Party of Democracy’ has proven just the opposite,” Johnson said. wrote in a tweet on Sunday in which he also called on Biden to resign from office.
The Republican presidential candidate for 2024, Donald Trump, and his vice presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH), also indicated in an interview with Fox News recorded the day before Biden’s announcement, about the possibility of a coup in the palace.

As it turns out, they may not be so wrong. According to sources familiar with the New York PostA plan by leading Democratic officials had been in place “for weeks,” which included, among other things, pushing Joe Biden onto the debate stage to prove to diehard supporters that it was time for him to drop out of the presidential race:
Agents at the highest levels of the Democratic Party threatened Joe Biden with to remove him from office by force unless he resigns, sources told The Post.
The well-orchestrated “palace coup” designed to stop the struggling president from seeking re-election has been underway for weeks, but the dogged Biden has resisted it at every turn, a source close to the Biden family told The Washington Post on Monday.
The insider also revealed the anger, paranoia and frustration Biden displayed as the party elite surrounded him and increased the pressure.
Part of the “sophisticated” strategy to take Biden out of the race – as he said in a Shocking letter posted on X-Sunday – enabled him to have a live televised debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump in Atlanta last month.
The Post later noted: “As [post-debate] As calls for his resignation grew louder, Biden insisted he would continue, but party bigwigs threatened to invoke the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”
This is partly consistent with a Politico Sunday article that states: talked about how former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had been working feverishly behind the scenes for weeks to get the ball rolling and push Joe out of the race, including by exerting public pressure:
Top Biden aides were bracing for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to go public this week and possibly even release Democratic poll results that highlight Biden’s dire political situation. Pelosi had been working behind the scenes to encourage others in the party to take collective action that might finally persuade the president to end his campaign.
“Nancy made it clear they could do it the easy way or the hard way,” said a Democrat familiar with private conversations who was granted anonymity to speak candidly. “She gave them the easy way for three weeks. It was going to be the hard way.”
Pelosi’s comments about two weeks after Biden’s nightmarish debate performance, in which she refused to say whether she supported him remaining in the race (“I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is”), are widely seen on the Democratic side as a turning point in the discussion about what Biden should do.
Regardless of which top Democrats are behind the failure of Biden’s 2024 presidential bid, I think it is confirmed beyond a doubt at this point who the real “threat to democracy” are, as my colleague Nick Arama has well explained:
After the disastrous debate, they suddenly decided to throw him out of the race because they thought he was going to lose. That’s not how our system is supposed to work. That would just put those 14 million votes aside so that the political elites can force a candidate on us at their convention in August – and it might not even be Kamala. They don’t care what the voters think, and they don’t care that they already rejected Kamala for president in 2020. If they cared about his condition, they wouldn’t have put him up in the first place; they’re only doing it now because they’re going to lose.
Enough said.
