She had the incumbent advantage and was predicted by recent polls that she would retain her seat. Now Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) won their primary in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.
Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has won the Democratic primary for her seat in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, almost certain to serve two more years in the House, Decision Desk HQ predicts.
Omar fended off a challenge from former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels. who almost upset her two years ago in a primary. In 2022, she won by fewer than 2,500 votes in a race that totaled more than 110,000 votes.
Although the counting of votes in the first election in MN-05 was much slower than in other congressional districts, at the time of writing, Omar had already counted 99 percent of the votes, giving him a lead of 13.3 percentage points over Samuels, a difference of 16,000 votes.

Omar will face Republican challenger Dalia Al-Aqidi in November, but with a D+30 district, she should win easily. Unlike fellow “Squad” Democrats Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO), Omar appears set to return to Washington, DC, for the 119th Congress.
