Senate campaign for former Maryland governor Larry Hogan says he plans to avoid Republican National Convention

Larry Hogan is the kind of Republican who can be elected to statewide office in Maryland, which puts him to the left of most of the Republican Party. He has firmly placed himself in the ranks of those who dislike Donald Trump, and with Trump looking set to be nominated for a second term at the Republican National Convention, the former governor and current Senate candidate has dropped out.

Hogan’s campaign confirmed to The Hill that the former governor will not attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July. The convention, at which the former President Trump The election for the party’s official candidate will take place from July 15 to 18.

The former governor did not attend the party’s conventions in 2016 and 2020.

Hogan, a staunch Trump critic, is running against Angela Alsobrooks (D-P), governor of Prince George’s County. Alsobrooks defeated the representative. David Thron (Md.) for the Democratic nomination last month in one of the most pricey Senate primaries in the country.

Mr Hogan was no fan of Trump and has not made any fresh friends in Republican ranks since the infamous verdict in the Manhattan trial last week.

The announcement comes after Hogan alienated some of Trump’s key allies last week, when he called on voters to “respect the verdict and the judicial process” just minutes before the decision in the first criminal trial against the former president.

Chris LaCivita, Trump’s campaign manager, shot back at Hoganand said: “You just finished your campaign.” Co-Chairman of the Republican National Committee Lara Trump said the politician from Maryland “does not deserve the respect of anyone in the Republican Party and, quite frankly, anyone in America at this point.”

As annoying as a soft-spoken Republican like Larry Hogan (or Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, or Princess Lisa Murkowski) may be, there is still a strategic aspect to consider.

Although Hogan would be well advised to avoid the convention, as it will be all about Trump – and rightly so, as he is already considered a likely candidate – he would still be better off in the Senate as a Democrat. Senator JD Vance understands:

Sen. JD Vance (Republican from Ohio), Who is a candidate for Trump’s vice presidential candidate, said last week that it was “entirely appropriate to criticize Hogan for his post,” but acknowledged that Hogan is running in a heavily Democratic state that President Biden won by 33 percentage points in 2020.

“He will obviously run a different campaign than I would run,” Vance said“I still hope he wins.”

Assuming President Trump wins his second term and the House remains in Republican hands, a Republican majority in the Senate is also needed before any substantive action can be taken to fix the mess the Biden administration has made over the past three and a half years. We may need every seat to do that, and since the majority controls the agenda, from committee assignments to deciding which bills get voted on and which get filed in the circular, a yielding Republican in a seat is better than any Democrat.

This year is a tense year, and we have made great progress since Ronald Reagan proclaimed his eleventh commandment: “Thou shalt never speak ill of another Republican.”
