CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) is poised to become the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. Senate, and she hopes to operate that influence to address issues of interest to West Virginia are. Senator Capito will also become the state’s senior senator with the resignation of Senator Joe Manchin.
Senator Capito will now chair the Republican Policy Committee, the fourth most senior leader in the Senate. She will also chair the Environment and Public Works Committee, which influences some energy policies. She will support advance legislation for new President Donald Trump.
Capito says one of the biggest items on the agenda is eliminating new regulations that restrict coal-fired power plants and the operate of fossil fuels.
“We must pursue a serious, all-of-the-above energy policy and not pick winners and losers like the Biden administration has done. And that means moving forward and discovering our own resources,” Capito said.
Senator Capito says another major concern is U.S. border security, particularly all the illegal fentanyl being smuggled in by Mexican drug cartels. Many of these drugs end up in Appalachia, which has the highest overdose death rate in the nation.
The senator says it is also significant to renew the tax cuts passed in 2017. Some of them will expire next year.
