CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — The subject of major debate in Washington on Tuesday was President Biden’s new border security plan, which a West Virginia senator says is insufficient.
In some months, more than a quarter of a million migrants try to enter the United States. Now the Biden administration wants to limit that number to 2,500 per day, and only for people seeking political asylum.
A congressional delegation recently traveled to Finland to view the wall along the Russian border, saying the United States needs a similar wall for Mexico.
“To protect America as a country that welcomes immigrants, we must first secure the border, and we must do it now. The simple truth is that there is a global refugee crisis,” said President Joe Biden.
“Finland finally decided enough was enough. So we went out to look at the wall they built. It’s a metal wall, it’s about 15 feet high. There’s wire attached to the top. It’s equipped with all kinds of surveillance cameras,” said Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R) of West Virginia.
In our region, the biggest concern is that fentanyl manufactured in China is being smuggled into the United States through Mexico. It is blamed for more than 70,000 deaths per year, primarily in the Appalachian states.
Republican leaders want to challenge Biden’s immigration decree in court. They say it violates the separation of powers because Congress must be involved in such decisions.
