It will not shock you in the least to learn that members of the anti-gun lobby are exploiting the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump to push for stricter gun restrictions.
As is typical of anti-gun activists, their arguments are as nonsensical as ever.
Anti-gun activist David Hogg argued in a post on X: “If this can happen to a president with Secret Service, if this can happen in Parkland with a police officer stationed on our campus, if this can happen in Uvalde with hundreds of police officers, then STOP TALKING ABOUT GOOD PEOPLE WITH GUNS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE GUNS.”
If something like this can happen to a president with the Secret Service, if something like this can happen in Parkland with a police officer assigned to our campus, if something like this can happen in Uvalde with hundreds of police officers.
STOP TALKING ABOUT GOOD PEOPLE WITH GUNS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE GUNS.

It’s the same argument that anti-gun activists use when there are mass shootings. Of course, I had to respond with a question that would make these people pause in their thoughts:
How did the assassination attempt on Trump end, David? https://t.co/j8WG6gVoLB

Author Stephen King also spoke out after discovering that the shooter used an “AR-style” rifle, arguing, “These are the weapons that the Republican Party – and Trump – want to protect.”
An AR-15 semi-automatic rifle was used in the shooting of Butler, the weapons the Republican Party – and Trump – are trying to protect.

Everytown for Gun Safety, a leading anti-gun organization, called the shooting an “unacceptable and tragic reminder of the gun violence crisis in our country” and argued, “When guns are everywhere, for everyone, no questions asked, no one is safe.”
This is unacceptable and a tragic reminder of the gun violence crisis in our country. No one is sheltered from gun violence. When guns are everywhere, for everyone, no questions asked, no one is sheltered. https://t.co/7ZyklT4HNh

It was recently revealed that the rifle the shooter used was registered to the assassin’s father. Investigators are currently looking into whether it was acquired legally, two senior police officials say. How Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspected shooter, came into possession of his father’s weapon is unclear.
However, this has not stopped those seeking to disarm the population from using the assassination attempt to advocate making it more arduous for law-abiding ordinary citizens to own and carry weapons.
But there’s another question that gives these people pause. I ask myself this after every high-profile shooting: What novel gun restrictions would you recommend that would have prevented this attack?
That question always silences them, because there are no restrictions that would stop a malefactor from carrying out such attacks. And these people are usually stopped by another person with a firearm. In this case, it happened to be Secret Service agents who prevented Trump’s potential death. But when has the truth ever stopped anti-gun activists?
