It’s 2024 and that means sharp people are going back to age-old, common sense ideas and turning them into something “new.”
Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI in 2016, is winning new friends and receiving praise for his tech company’s vision statement, in which he coined a new term to combat DEI, which stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Wang’s phrase is DEI’s new nemesis: MEI, for merit, excellence, and intelligence:
Today, we formalized an vital hiring policy at Scale. We hire based on MEI criteria: performance, excellence, and intelligence.
This is the email I sent to our @scale_AI Team.

LERITOCRACY ON A GRAND SCALE
During our fundraising campaign I received many questions…

Alexandr Wang’s company has come a long way in its six years of existence. It is valued at $14 billion, has won government contracts from the Department of Defense, and has partnered with OpenAI. He attributes this to having a high-quality team that is not based on race, gender, or other stereotypes.
Wang calls his company a “meritocracy” and promises it will always stay that way. It’s silly to think that more than 50 years after the civil rights movement, we have to fight against a reverse, whitewashed, new form of racism and discrimination that is branded as “equality.” Wang puts the woke in their place and explains it to them in straightforward terms that they should understand.
“There is a false assumption that meritocracy somehow clashes with diversity. I strongly disagree,” Wang wrote. “No group has a monopoly on excellence. A merit-based hiring process will naturally produce a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and ideas. To do this, you have to cast a wide net for talent and then select the best, objectively and without bias in any direction. We will not select winners and losers based on whether someone is the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ race, gender, etc. It should go without saying, and yet it must be said: To do so would be racist and sexist, not to mention illegal.”
His announcement caught the attention and praise of tech guru Elon Musk.
Thank you, Elon! Your support means a lot to me as a founder.

The nation is slowly beginning to realize the stupidity of DEI. Job postings for these positions are down 44 percent. Many places are laying off their DEI departments. What began as a response to the mobs following George Floyd’s death has now been allowed to quietly fade into the background. Anyone who has ever run a successful business or organization knows that the program was doomed from the start. The problem is that we should be sharp enough not to let the left “experiment” on our society with their outlandish ideas in the first place. And we should not let mobs force us into programs.
ScaleAI raised $1 billion in funding in May, making 27-year-old Wang the youngest self-made billionaire. We should listen to people like him at the top: performance, talent, intelligence and quality count.
We cannot be competitive in any industry if we exclude talented people from the job market simply because of the color of their skin or their gender. This affects us not only at home, but also our international reputation. The fact that the left fought for this program proves what Republicans have always said: They are not interested in quality, but in dominance. They are not interested in real progress for the country, they just want to impose their will.
