The Moines, Iowa (AP) – the superintendent of the Moines Public School, who was arrested by immigration authorities, submitted his resignation on Tuesday while concentrating on the focus of questioning his impending deportation, said his lawyer.
Ian Roberts had the impression of an earlier lawyer in the impression that his immigration case was “successfully solved”, said lawyer Alfredo Parrish. His law firm submitted an application to remain Robert’s deportation from an immigration court in Omaha, Nebraska, and worked on another application to reopen the educator’s immigration procedure.
The US immigration and customs authorities arrested Roberts last week and said that the native and former Olympic runner of Guyana had lived and worked illegally in the country. Roberts’ license as a superintendent robbed a state board.
On Monday, the school authority of the Moines voted to bring Roberts from his job to the district, which has more than 30,000 students.
Roberts submitted a letter about his lawyer, in which he announced his immediate resignation on Tuesday and said he did not want to distract the district manager and teacher from concentration on education.
The board had given Roberts until Tuesday 12 noon to indicate documentaries from which it can be seen that it can legally work in the United States. It is planned to hold a meeting on Tuesday evening to check whether the resignation is accepted or drawn to Roberts.
The counter -reaction from the arrest was far from over.
The Civil Rights Department of the Ministry of Justice announced on Tuesday whether the district is involved in racial discrimination by preferring non-white applicants as part of a plan for “increased color teachers”. A district spokesman said the matter had been checked.
In the meantime, hundreds of students marched from their classrooms on Tuesday to protest against Roberts’ arrest and the broader approach of ICE against illegal immigration.
The 54 -year -old Roberts is held in the Woodbury County prison in Sioux City, about 240 kilometers northwest of the Moines.
Parrish described Roberts as the “enormous lawyer of this community” and as an inspiration for students and thanked the public for support. Parrish said he and other lawyers spoke to Roberts for hours on Tuesday and “his mood is high”.
Parrish warned that it was a “very complex case”, which will take time for the investigation. He admitted that Roberts was exposed to deportation at all times, and it was uncertain whether his novel appeals were taken into account by the court.
The federal authorities also examine how Roberts received a pistol that was allegedly found in his district vehicle during the arrest of the past week, which could lead to criminal charges.
The office of the US MP Zach Nunn, a Republican who represents the area of the Moines, published an edited extract from Roberts’ removal decision in May 2024 on Tuesday, after receiving the document by the law on the freedom of information.
The document claims that Roberts was made available for a removal for the announcement of a hearing, but a relief was not given or requested in any other way.
An immigration judge found that the Department of Homeland Security presented appropriate evidence to support its allegations that Roberts is subject to distance. The judge ordered Roberts to take precautions in order to go voluntarily or be deported.
Parrish confirmed that his client was born in Guyana. But Parrish did not say whether he had ever been applied for for the US citizenship or indefinite residence residence when his work permit may have expired and what happened during the distance procedure last year.
He published a letter in March 2025, of which he said he was from Roberts’ former lawyer in Texas, in which he informed her client that the case had been concluded in his favor.
“It was a pleasure for me to represent you during this process, and I am pleased to report that your case has achieved a successful solution,” wrote the Texas lawyer Jackeline Gonzalez.
An adjutant from Gonzalez confirmed that the Robert law firm had represented but had not made an immediate comment.
The chairman of the school authority, Jackie Norris, said that the district was only informed about the distance order on Monday.
She said Roberts signed a form in which he confirmed that he was a US citizen when he was hired in 2023, and he submitted a social security card and a driver’s license as a review.
When Roberts was cited in Iowa in 2023 and 2024 due to traffic violations, he each introduced a driver’s license from Maryland, which had different addresses, as the tickets show.
Roberts has been registered at one of the addresses since at least 2017 at least 2017. The Maryland Board of Elections said Roberts’ registration may have been unintentionally, and a review “did not show any voice history”.
A spokesman for Maryland’s Ministry of Transport said Roberts had a state license from 2001 to 2024 when he was exchanged to New York.
