Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (AP) – the Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, came to the Dominican Republic on Monday to show the points of people who died last week when the roof of a popular night club in the country’s capital, Santo Domingo, collapsed.
A visit to the competitive mayor comes so many of the 700,000 Dominicans who live in New York and represent 8% of its population, the victims who took part in a concert in the Jet Set Club on April 7.
Adams first met with the police and other local authorities and then visited the place of the club, where he was received by officials, including Victor d’Aza, President of the Dominican Municipal League. It is the body that regulates the offices of the mayors who are responsible for granting building permits and monitoring the renovation of work.
“This must be a lesson for a more effective supervision to strict the rules too strictly. This is a wake -up call,” d’Aza told The Associated Press.
According to the Interior Minister Faride Raful, the number of fatalities rose from 226 to 231 on Monday.
The crews saved 189 people from the ruins and 12 are still hospitalized. According to health officials, three of them are in a critical condition.
The cause of the roof collapse was not clear and the authorities examined.
Adams said he offered his lend a hand to prevent something similar from happening again in the Dominican Republic.
“I had to come here to a country that gave us their children to make America what it is,” he said. “My heart broke.”
Adams should take part in a trade fair in the evening.
His visit comes when he is preparing to run for the re -election after a bribery scandal and anger among the followers of the democratic politician about his hot relationship with the Republican US President Donald Trump.
