MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) – The Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee has passed a resolution calling for the resignation of a state senator following his third arrest earlier this month.
Michael Maroney was arrested Sept. 23 in Marshall County and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, expired registration 1 and no registration.
He was already arrested in August on two counts of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct related to an incident in which Maroney allegedly committed an “overt act of sexual gratification.”
In a news release Friday morning, county GOP Chairman Ethan Moore said, “The committee recognizes the principle of innocence until proven guilty, but expresses significant concerns about the Senator’s ability to continue to serve effectively and the public’s trust.” preserve.”
Maroney was removed from his state Senate committee positions following his arrest in August.
The resolution passed by the committee said his legal issues limit his ability to fully represent his constituents and that this “effectively leaves Senate District 2 one vote behind.”
It also calls on Gov. Jim Justice (R) to authorize the Senate to expel or censure Maroney if he does not resign voluntarily.
Maroney’s district includes Monongalia County, mostly north and west of Morgantown, and also includes portions of Marion and Marshall counties and all of Doddridge, Wetzel and Tyler counties.
