PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – The Putnam County Commission still has an open seat after Wednesday morning’s meeting.
Electing a novel commissioner was on the meeting’s agenda, but there was no agreement on who should fill the empty seat. Now the Republican Executive Committee will recommend three names for the position.
After the committee has submitted its proposals, the Commission has fifteen days to select one of the names. However, the committee has no timeline for when those names must be submitted.
This all comes days after former Commissioner Steve DeWeese pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fraud charges. Deweese admitted to stealing a total of $4,000 in funds intended for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office between 2017 and 2019 while serving as sheriff.
DeWeese’s sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 12 and he faces up to a year in prison.
