Washington (AP) – A Senate Committee voted on Thursday to raise Linda McMahon’s nomination as an education secretary of President Donald Trump and brought her closer to the management of an agency that the Republican President would like to close.
The Senate Committee for Health, Education, Labor and Pension agreed after 12-11 parties to send their nomination from the full Senate.
At her hearing for confirmation, McMahon said that she wanted to “reign” the educational department. Since his campaign, Trump has asked the department to be abolished, but McMahon admitted that only the congress could complete it.
“We would like to make sure that we present a plan with which our senators could go on board in my opinion,” she said.
McMahon was pushed to the fate of the core initiatives of the agency and said Trump wants to be more capable, but do not want to remove them. She suggested that certain roles could be moved to other agencies, and said that the department’s low civil rights could go to the Ministry of Justice.
She promised to receive the money for the state of the state of I for schools with low incomes, pell grants for students with low income and the program for forgiveness for public service loans, all of which were created by the congress.
At the same time, McMahon promised to cut off the federal money from schools that oppose Trump’s orders against transgender athletes in women’s sports, campus anti -Semitism and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across the country.
The Democrats were alarmed by McMahon’s answer to questions about Trump’s command to ban DEI programs in schools. When asked whether African -American history classes could trigger a loss of the federal government, McMahon said that she was not sure and had to investigate it.
McMahon, a billionaire Trump allied and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, brings less experience in education than many others in the role. In 2009 she was a member of the Connecticut Board of Education for about a year and is a long -time trustee at the Sacred Heart University. She left the WWE in 2009 and led two unsuccessful offers for the US Senate in Connecticut.
At the hearing, the Republicans were mainly behind McMahon, although Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska said that Trump would ask McMahon to cross her authority and to disrupt the local control of the schools.
The White House is considering an arrangement that would instruct the Minister of Education to reduce the educational department and at the same time ask the congress to completely abolish it.
Even without the arrangement, the Trump management has released or suspended more than 100 employees in the educational department. Dozens of contracts were canceled by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
The latest cuts announced behind schedule Wednesday include grants of a total of 226 million US dollars for a program with which schools are intended to improve the results and quality of the lesson, especially for students with the greatest need. A press release from the educational department states that the program promotes “identity -based identity ideology on racial -based discrimination and gender tests”.
