Charleston, W.Va. (AP) – President Donald Trump’s government has proposed several changes that would influence the fighting US coal industry.
This month, Trump granted the executive’s application to enable mining in federal state. He used his emergency authority to enable some older coal -fired power plants for retirement to produce electricity in order to satisfy the increasing demand in view of growth in data centers, artificial intelligence and electric cars.
The Republican President also granted almost 70 older coal -fired power plants a two -year liberation from the federal requirements to reduce the emissions of toxic chemicals.
The government efficiency team from Trump, conducted by Elon Musk, made plans for the end of the rental contracts of 34 US office for security and health administration in 19 states at the beginning of this year.
The decades of decline in coal
The coal industry made more than half of the US stream generation available. But it has decreased sharply for decades when the operators went out of business and the supply companies were converted more renewable energies and were converted with cheaper and cleaner natural gas.
In 2014, the US coal production was 1 billion tons (907,000 tons) and fell to 578 million tons (524 million tons) by 2023. According to the US Energy Information Administration, this is available last year.
Coal employment reached its peak in the 1920s in the 1920s when there were around 900,000 miners. It was around 350,000 in 1950 and has decreased steadily since 1980. Targeting MSHA
MSHA is responsible for the enforcement of US security laws. It is necessary to inspect every underground mine quarterly and each surface mine twice a year. The cuts proposed by Musk’s so-called Ministry of Government Efficiency would have to request MSHA inspectors to get into a mine, and this could mean less thorough inspections, said Jack Spadaro, a long-time investigator and environmental specialist who worked for this agency.
According to the Doge website, the termination of the MSHA leasing contracts is expected to save $ 18 million. It is unclear whether the positions of the inspectors and other jobs would be moved from these offices to other facilities.
Seven of the MSHA buses that are set to close are in Kentucky and four in Pennsylvania. West Virginia is one of the states with two targeted offices. Also for the closure, the Office for facilities for the mining and enforcement facilities of surface reduction in Lexington, Kentucky and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and reduces the national footprint of an agency that was created during the Carter administration in order to restore the land damaged by Strip mining, and to regain the abandoned and damaged mine.
A current review of publicly available data from the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center shows that almost 17,000 health and security inspections were carried out by MSHA employees in the facilities on the Hackklotz from early 2024 to February 2025.
What other uses are there for coal?
Industry representatives have long claimed that there are other uses for coal, some of which operate cleaner technology.
Canonsburg, Core Core Core Resources in Pennsylvania, is working on the development of a process in West Virginia Coal to create a synthetic material that can be used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which reduces the US dependency of countries like China, according to Matthew Mackowiak, the director of the company.
Core recently acquired a company that transforms coal into carbon foam, the composite tools that are used for the production of nasal panels and layer wings for the US defense industry.
“Whether there will be more coal regeneration in the future, obviously this will be something else in the future,” said Mackowiak. “But at least we have to concentrate on maintaining our current coal fleet.”
