UP IN THE MORNING
AZ judge apologizes in ‘imitation electors’ case after emails surface demanding judge defend Kamala
The denial follows a filing in Arizona Superior Court by David Warrington and Michael Columbo, attorneys representing Arizona state Sen. Jake Hoffman in the lawsuit. They wondered whether Cohen could remain impartial in featherlight of his emails.
Thomas Massie’s stunning remarks to reporters about the Gaetz nomination will drive Democrats crazy
But I think it’s unthreatening to say that the nomination has people on the left in particular excited. They don’t like running out of power and being outmaneuvered.
The truth about why Kamala Harris refused to do an interview with Joe Rogan is coming to featherlight
So America got Kamala Harris’ script version instead – and thankfully rejected it anyway.
WHAT’S UPCOMING?
Today on Capitol Hill…
Well, that was an eventful Wednesday! In the 119th Congress, Senator Jon Thune (SD) will serve as Majority Leader. In the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson (LA) will retain his role as Speaker. A major challenge for the recent Senate will be confirming the numerous nominations for President-elect Donald Trump that Thune has pledged to move quickly — particularly those that are more controversial in nature, such as the surprise election of Matt Gaetz (R- FL) to Attorney General.
While the Pennsylvania Senate race has been called for Republican Dave McCormick, incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey is refusing to concede and it now faces a recount with less than half a percentage point separating the two.
Several hearings are scheduled for Thursday, including:
- House Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation – “Snowbound: United States Disinvestment in the Arctic”
- House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic – “Preparing for the Next Pandemic: Lessons Learned and the Path Forward”
What’s going on in the White House?
Fresh from his Wednesday play date with Trump, President Joe Biden is traveling to Lima, Peru tardy Thursday morning to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. There, Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday before traveling to Brazil, where he will visit an Amazon rainforest before attending the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Full court press…
Trump is one step closer to dismissing the federal criminal cases against him. On Wednesday, special counsel Jack Smith announced that he plans to resign before Trump’s inauguration and later filed a motion with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals asking the court to hear the government’s appeal of the dismissal of the case over confidential documents Judge Aileen Cannon to suspend.
Thursday marks another decision day for the New York Court of Appeals – theoretically there could be a verdict in the civil fraud complaint. Perhaps.
Morning rumination
Aren’t you entertained? Yes… it would be naive to assume that Trump 2.0 won’t be peppered with some jaw-dropping moments – some courtesy of DJT himself, others courtesy of those who oppose him at every turn. The two substantial surprises in the cabinet election so far are Pete Hegseth for SecDef and Matt Gaetz for AG. I’m pretty sure Trump doesn’t just throw darts at a dartboard and announce random decisions. As I said, this time he’s older, wiser – and smarter. It remains to be seen whether his “strategy” will prevail at some point. Until then… give me the popcorn.
