Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota will face off in a crucial vice presidential debate Tuesday night, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. With the race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump appearing to be getting tighter in the polls by the day, this could be one of the most consequential matchups between the vice presidential candidates in debate history.
Both face their own problems, but they have one thing in common: neither of them was at the top of the headlines just a few months ago before they were chosen. Vance might be better known since he has the best-selling book and movie.Hillbilly Elegy” on his name, but if you had him on the vice presidential ticket at the start of the year, I would advise you to consider a career in betting.
By now, almost no one expected Harris to choose Walz, because those who watched “Jazz Hands” knew he was a stuttering weirdo with more baggage than Kate Winslet who boarded the Titanic.
But Vance faces an obstacle that Minnesota’s gesticulating governor doesn’t: a relentless attack from a corrupt corporate media that will twist his words in every way imaginable to discredit him:
But for Vance in particular, the showdown could be a pivotal moment as he positions himself as “the heir apparent” to Trump, said Tammy Vigil, a professor of media studies at Boston University who focuses on political campaigns.
“Vance has been in the news for a lot of not always positive things,” Vigil said. “He has an opportunity here to either try to change the narrative or reinforce it.”
The press picked up on practically everything he said:
Vance has drawn backlash for a range of his statements and positions, from his past criticism of Trump to critical comments Democrats without children. He recently came under fire reinforce a false claim about Haitian migrants and took a stab by pop superstar Taylor Swift for his previous comments that the country was run by him “childless cat ladies” than what he defended a sarcastic comment.
In the meantime, he stays chilly:

Walz, on the other hand, does supposedly nervous about the upcoming showdown:
Speaking to aides who have rallied around him in Minnesota and other supporters, Walz repeatedly returns to how worried he is about letting Harris down, according to nearly a dozen senior campaign officials and others working with the governor and his team that was in contact with him. He doesn’t want to Donald Trump win. He doesn’t want Harris to think she made the wrong choice.
It sounds to me like he doesn’t want to be exposed for what CNN’s Scott Jennings calls “the jerk” that he is.
