Washington (AP) – President Donald Trump celebrated the news on Monday that an alumni group from West Point had canceled a award ceremony to honor Tom Hanks, whereby the president described the celebrated actor as “destructive” and “awakened”.
Hanks was to receive the Sylvanus Thayer Award 2025 on September 25th, but the alumni association of the US Military Academy canceled the ceremony last week, according to news reports.
“Important step!” Trump said on Monday in a post in his social media network. “We do not need a destructive, awakened recipient who receive our esteemed American Awards !!! Hopefully the Oscar prices and other fake award shows will check their standards and practices on behalf of fairness and justice.”
West Point, its alumni association and a representative of Hanks, did not immediately respond to news and calls that are looking for a comment on Monday.
It happens that Trump led the ideology and leadership of university institutions and the military in his second term and tries to take control with a mixture of executive regulations and threats through legal steps and to withhold funds.
This summer, army secretary West Point instructed to review his attitudes, to exclude the selection of employees outside of groups and to remove a newly announced attitude that headed the country’s cyber security agency under the then President Joe Biden.
At the beginning of this year, West Point dissolved a dozen cadet club that concentrated on ethnicity, gender, breed and sexuality to remove diversity programs in the entire government in response to the advance of the Trump government. The school also built a painting by General Robert E. Lee in his confederated uniform in the library when the Trump administration has pushed to restore the names and monuments of the Confederates in recent years.
The Sylvanus Thayer Award was awarded an early superintendent of the military academy, who is known as the “father of West Point”. Since 1958 it has been awarded to an outstanding citizen of the United States, whose service and services in the national interest have illustrated the personal dedication to the ideals expressed in West Point’s motto: “Duty, honor, country”, according to the West Point Association of Graduates.
“Tom Hanks has more done for the positive representation of the American service member, more for the care of the American veteran, their nurses and their family and more for the American space program and all government branches than many other Americans,” said Robert McDonald, CEO of Association Board, in a press release in June about the award.
The retired Col. Col. Mark Bieger, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association wrote in an e -mail on Friday that the decision to turn to the award ceremony, “to prepare, to fight, to fight and to win the academy as officers in the world’s most fatal violence,” according to the army, according to the army. United States, which prepared the first employ of the worldwide violence that prepares the cancer brand.
The recipient of the last year was former President Barack Obama.
Hanks played in the war drama “Saving Private Ryan” from 1998 with Steven Spielberg, the HBO mini series “Band of Brothers” with Steven Spielberg.
Hanks is one of Hollywood’s most politically energetic celebrities and donates to support a lot of democratic politicians and advanced causes. He supported Obama, Hillary Clinton and Biden in their commandments of the President and signed an open letter last year in which Kamala Harris was supported.
He also went to work for the Democrats. In 2012 he told a compact documentary “The Street we have on trips” for Obama’s re -election campaign.
In Fete Biden’s inauguration in 2021, Hanks organized a 90-minute television special “Celebrating America”.
A year later, he told a two-minute commercial of the Biden opening committee for the achievements of the first term of office of the President. He also served as a co-chair when we all vote, a non-party organization for bourgeois engagements, which was founded by the former first Lady Michelle Obama to enhance the voter.
And for the most part of the past decade, Hanks has no secret of his disapproval of Trump and the President’s policy. During an interview on stage in 2016, he described the then Republican candidate as a “self -related gas bag”. After Trump took office, Hanks said during a fundraising campaign by the American Civil Liberties Union that actions such as the attempted traveler ban a “brand tragmedia” for Muslim majority countries.
During the inauguration of bidges, he spoke of “deep divisions and a disturbing rancor in our country” and warned of attempts to twist the truth by those who were entrusted with public service during a speech of the opening speech by Harvard in 2023. It was only last year that he was enthusiastic about the Trump supporter after he had portrayed a caricature of one during the 50th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live”.
