Washington (AP) – President Donald Trump removed the head of the agency on Friday, who proved the monthly jobs after a reporting in July and was much weaker in May and June than before.
In a post in his social media platform, Trump claimed that the numbers were manipulated for political reasons, and said that Erika Mcentarfer, director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was to be released by the former President Joe Biden. He did not provide any evidence of the indictment.
“I have instructed my team to immediately dismiss this political representative of bidies,” said Trump about the social truth. “It is replaced by someone who is much more competent and qualified.”
Trump later wrote: “In my opinion, today’s jobs were manipulated to manipulate the Republicans and me.”
The indictment that the data has been bogus is an explosive that undermines the political legitimacy of the US government’s economic data, which has long been seen as a “gold standard” of the economic measurement worldwide. Economists and Wall Street investors have generally assumed the data as free of political prejudices for decades.
Trump’s move to the Mcentarfer fire was another extraordinary claim of the presidential power. He has raised the authority of the White House to control the world’s international trading system, media company, America’s top universities and congress constitutional authority of the wallet.
McEecentarfer’s dismissal was convicted by a group to which two former BLS commissioners included, including William Beach, who was appointed position by Trump. In particular, they rejected the indictment that the data was changed for political reasons.
“This justification for the dismissal of Dr. Mcentarfer is unfounded and undermines the credibility of Federal Economic Statistics, which are a cornerstone of intelligent economic decision -making by companies, families and political decision -makers,” said the group’s statement, The Friends of BLS.
In addition to Beach, the explanation was signed by Erica Groshen, BLS commissioner under the former President Barack Obama.
“Disassembly of the Commissioner … If the BLS revises the jobs (as routinely it does), Arin Dube, economist at the University of Massachusetts-AMherst, threatens to destroy confidence in the American core institutions and all state statistics.
After Trump’s initial post, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer said that McEecentarfer no longer managed the office and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would act as deputy director.
“I support the president’s decision to replace bidens commissioner and ensure that the American people can trust the important and influential data of BLS,” said Chavez deremer.
The job report on Friday showed that only 73,000 jobs were added last month and that 258,000 jobs were created in May and June. The report stated that the economy weakened a lot during the term of trump, a pattern that matched the slowdown of economic growth in the first year of the year and an boost in inflation in June, which reflected the price pressure of the president of the President.
“What does a bad leader do when he gets bad news? Do you shoot the messenger,” said Chuck Schumer from New York in a speech on Friday.
McEecentarfer was nominated by bids in 2023 and became the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in January 2024. The commissioners usually serve four years of office, but since they are political representatives, they can be released. The Commissioner is the only political appointment of the agency that has hundreds of career officers.
The Senate confirmed Mcencentarfer to her post 86-8, with Vice President JD Vance being with the YEE votes.
Trump concentrated a lot of his anger on the revisions that the agency had carried out for previous hiring data. The jobs in May were revised to only 19,000 of previously revised 125,000, and for June they were reduced from 147,000 to 14,000. Only 73,000 positions were added in July. The unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%.
“Nobody can be so wrong? We need precise jobs,” wrote Trump. “It is replaced by someone who is much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this have to be fair and exactly, they cannot be manipulated for political purposes.”
Trump was not always so suspicious of the monthly job report and reacted enthusiastically after the first May numbers were released on June 6 when it was initially reported that the economy added 139,000 jobs.
“Great job numbers, stock market markets big!” Trump posted at the time.
This estimate was later revised to 125,000 jobs before the most reduced revision was reduced to only 19,000.
During the 2016 campaign, Trump was more critical: he often attacked jobs when they showed that the unemployment rate was steadily withering, while Obama was still president to change the data immediately as soon as he was in office because steady jobs were continued.
The monthly employment report is one of the most observed state economic data and can cause acute fluctuations on the financial markets. The disappointing number sent us market indices by about 1.5% lower Friday.
The revisions of the figures in May and June were quite vast and surprising for many economists. At the same time, every monthly job report contains revisions in the earlier two months. These revisions take place if the government of companies receives more answers to their survey, which offer a more complete picture of employment trends every month.
In the past ten years, companies have taken longer to react, which may have contributed to larger monthly revisions.
The proportion of companies that are responding to the surveys has also been steadily fallen in the past 10 years, but the survey still receives answers from around 200,000 business locations that can be independent companies or franchise companies with larger chains.
The monthly job report has long been guarded in the BLS, whereby early copies in unthreatening are kept under lock and key, and keys to prevent leaks or early distribution.
