CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed Attorney General Patrick Morrisey in the race for governor of West Virginia.

Trump announced this on his social media platform Truth Social. He wrote that Republicans should “unite behind Patrick Morrisey to ensure he delivers a great victory in November!”

Morrisey defeated businessman Chris Miller, Secretary of State Mac Warner and former West Virginia delegate Moore Capito, who was endorsed by current governor and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jim Justice, in last Tuesday’s primary election.

The Associated Press called the race just before 10:30 p.m., with Morrisey receiving 33% of the vote. The closest person to Morrisey was Capito, who received around 28% of the vote. Miller received 20% and Warner received 16%.

Morrisey faces Huntington Mayor and Democratic candidate Steve Williams and Mountain Party candidate Chase Linko-Looper for governor.

Morrisey won 34 of West Virginia’s 55 counties, with Miller winning 11 and Cpaito winning 10.

While Morrisey won overall, Miller and Capito won the western part of the state, with Miller capturing the westernmost counties of Boone, Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo and Wayne, according to the state department.

Capito won West Virginia’s most populous county: Kanawha County. He also captured Harrison, Jackson, Lewis, Marion, Putnam, Randolph, Roane, Upshur and Wyoming counties.
