Virginia Man is guilty of shoting Latino men because he thought they were illegal immigrants

Caroline County, Va. (Wric) – On Wednesday, a man in Virginia was guilty of watching and finally shooting two Latino men because of his “anger about illegal immigration”.

On Wednesday, June 18, Douglas W. Cornett confessed two cases of federal hate crimes, which contained attempts to kill, and a count of the dismissal of a firearm during a federal crowd of violence.

Court documents identify the two Latino men who Cornett as “Victim 1” and “Victim 2.” shot. The authorities in Spotsylvania previously said that they both come from Prince William County.

On February 28, 2024Cornett drove on Interstate 95 when he climbed to a van driven by victims. Cornett spent the truck by court documents and remained behind it, although victims tried to let him pass. Then he followed the truck to a petrol station.

On his arrival, victim 1 spoke to a friend of his who worked at the petrol station. He asked this friend who spoke English to ask Cornett what was wrong. After a compact conversation between the friend and Cornett, victim 1 left the petrol station.

According to court documents, Cornett followed victims 1 in the Thornburg region near the petrol station. When friend 1 of the victim described the victim 2 and told him that someone followed victim 1.

In particular, no victim in court documents was identified as immigrants without papers.

“Crimes like Douglas Cornet’s files not only to the individual, but also harm families, communities and groups by depriving them of their feeling of security,” said Erik S. Siebert, US lawyer of the eastern district of Virginia, in a press release. “Everyone has the right to live free of the fear of violence and the threat of hatred, and my office is obliged to eliminate both.”

Cornett will be convicted on November 13th. According to the conditions of his plea contract, he will not receive more than 24 years in prison.
