Given the electoral dynamics in Virginia, Hung Cao could be a long shot. Nevertheless, he is doing his best to unseat incumbent Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.

When Cao ran against Hillary Clinton’s 2016 nominee, he faced the typical off-the-wall questions that can be asked of any Republican at these events. On immigration, he was asked whether he would support mass deportations of “undocumented immigrants.”

MODERATOR: Mr. Cao, you have supported the deportation of undocumented immigrants who have committed violent crimes. Do you support the mass deportation of all undocumented immigrants? You have 60 seconds.

CAO: Immigration is very vital to me. When Vietnam fell we had nowhere to go and America brought us in and my parents waited in line for seven years to get our citizenship. The last thing my father had hanging above his bed when he died two years ago was his naturalization certificate. I love this country so much that I gave myself a blank check up to and including my life to defend it for 25 years in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and other parts of the world.

Here is my thing for everyone who wants to come here. Don’t ask for the American dream if you are not willing to obey American laws and embrace American culture like I did. And this is the most vital criterion for entering this country. If you come here illegally, you need to leave, especially if you are a violent criminal. We discovered just last week that 13,000 convicted murderers and 16,000 convicted rapists were under their watch. This is unacceptable. We must protect Americans every day, and I did that.

Thank you, Mr. Cao, but the question is whether you support the mass deportation of everyone [un]documented immigrants? That was the question asked. You have 30 seconds to respond.

If you came here illegally, you’re basically screwing up the whole system. There are people who, like my family, wait seven years for their naturalization papers. And that’s why you can’t jump the border. I mean, you go to Costco and skip the border. What do you think will happen? You know, that’s the thing, you can’t come here and expect the American dream if you’re not willing to embrace American laws and American culture. I did that.

I’m a little tired of this supposed problem question. For one thing, illegal immigrants are not “undocumented” because they are literally documented at the border and released into the interior of the country by the federal government under the Biden-Harris parole plan. Second, while we can argue all day about whether the 19,999,999. illegal immigrants should be deported, we have hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the country who have committed crimes other than crossing the border. How about we start there?

This is the same stupid game the Democrats are playing with abortion. You want to try to address the issue of margins when basic, common sense prevails. Before anyone discusses “exceptions” to abortion rights, how about we talk about why that is overwhelming majority do abortions occur? When it comes to illegal immigration, before we get into “family separation” or people who have been here for 30 years, how about we bother deporting the criminals and newer illegal immigrants, the one represent an enormous burden on US taxpayers?

Aside from answering some of the biased questions, Cao also managed to throw a few taunts at Kaine throughout the night.

The joke about Asians and math was pretty humorous and made the audience laugh. He is also right about the current situation in the country. For all the talk about caring for the little guy, Democrats have certainly created an economy in which the affluent get richer while ordinary Americans can’t afford to buy homes and struggle to afford their groceries because of interest rates and inflation pay.

Kaine is as close to the Beltway as it gets, while Cao has served his country honorably for several decades, risking his life in the process. One would hope that counts in a race like this. One would hope so.

When speaking about his military service, Cao also remained candid about the military using drag queens to recruit. This happened in mid-2023 and is just one example of the armed forces’ vigilance that has led to a personnel crisis.

That’s certainly one way of putting it, and I don’t know how it will be received more broadly given how foreign military culture is to so many, but he’s not wrong. Right now, the military seems more concerned with meeting diversity criteria than sending the most ruthless and capable fighting force onto the battlefield. Anyone who responds to a drag queen as a recruiting tool is probably not the type of person who should be recruited. And yet here we are, with the military’s appointed leadership making jokes of the various branches.

Here’s another moment where Cao attacked Kaine.

I don’t know if Cao will win or not, but I know it’s worth a try. If you live in Virginia, it’s time to deliver another Glenn Youngkin-style surprise. Kaine is a worthless Democratic rubber stamp. Now is the time for up-to-date leadership, and Cao wants to prove he can handle the job.
