Oh, that was ugly. Can I say it was over before it began?
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance appeared on “Meet the Press” Sunday this week to make a fool of moderator Kristen Welker. Let me rephrase that: To make Welker make an ass of oneself.
The article was about Trump’s promise, Flat-rate tariffs – which is probably a bad idea that I will write about in a future article. (Note: exporters do not pay tariffs as Trump claims; Importers Pay customs duties.)
Welker asked Vance: “How do you respond to the accusation that Trump’s tariffs are hurting the middle class?”
JD had an answer ready – and was content to respond:
If you sit back a little bit, Kristen, there is this whole thing that Kamala Harris did at the convention where she made a series of claims about what would happen, and not enough … reflection on what already happened, because Donald Trump already was president; He used tariffs to bring manufacturing jobs back to our country, and I believe he will do it again, while keeping prices extremely low.
[I]If you think back to the Trump presidency, 12,000 factories were built during his term, inflation never rose above two percent during his entire term… and was around one percent most of the time. So when Kamala Harris says, “If we do what Trump has already done, it will be much worse than the last time,” I just don’t think that makes sense.
Puppies, The was effortless.

Vance believes the 2024 elections will be “free and fair”
On another balmy topic, Vance told Welker he believes the election will be “free and fair.”
Welker: “Let’s get to something Donald Trump said in North Carolina and again on Friday night.”
This is what Trump looked like on Friday evening (see video below):
Our main concern is not to get voters to the polls, but to make sure there is no cheating. Because we have all the votes you need. You can see that… .
Far be it from me to contradict Donald, but getting voters to the polls should always have top priority, in particular if you suspect that the other side is cheating. Isn’t it logical that the more votes You get, the harder it becomes for the other side to cheat sufficiently?
“Why is Donald Trump sowing doubts about the election before it has even taken place?” asked Welker.
Regardless of which argument you believe, Vance made his own opinion known. After initially saying, “I don’t think Donald Trump does that,” Vance continued:
I think what he’s saying is that we in the Republican Party want to pursue a set of policies that will make it easier to cast and count every legal vote, but make it harder to count illegal votes.
We can argue about how many there are – a few hundred, a few thousand, maybe more – but in the last week alone… once in Arizona and once in Pennsylvania, there have been vital court decisions that make our election process more secure and more effective. I think that’s what Donald Trump is talking about.
We must advocate – sometimes through legal means, sometimes through better policies at the state or national level – for a set of rules that ensure that every vote is counted legally.
Welker countered: “Well, it (Trump’s comments) is very different from your message, which … was: ‘We have to work as hard as we can to convince Americans to vote for us …'”
“Do you agree with Donald Trump?” asked Welker, adding: “Here, too, he seems to be sowing doubts about the election result before it has even taken place.”
Vance laughed and then answered.
Of course we agree, Kristen. We talk all the time, and I guarantee you, if you sit here and ask, “Mr. President, do you believe that your campaign needs to persuade voters as much as possible,” then of course he’s going to say yes. That’s not inconsistent with the view that we need to take a range of approaches that ensure that legal ballots are counted. [and] Illegal ballots will not be counted.
Welker threw it in the basket again. “Do you believe that the 2024 elections will be free and fair?”
Vance replied:
I believe that, Kristen. I believe it will be free and fair, and we will do everything we can to make sure that happens. We will exhaust every means possible to make sure that legal ballots are counted. I feel very good about where we are now. I believe we will win this race – and I believe we will win a very good election.
In my not so humble opinion, a bit of political navigation between two different beliefs, which I think Vance did extraordinarily well.
What do you say?
