Kamala Harris hasn’t given an interview or a press conference since entering the presidential race over a month ago, but if you need a five-year-old-ready explanation of how teams work, she’s the guy to ask.

NEW: Kamala Harris’ first interview is finally scheduled, and the details are pathetic

The scene that went viral on Wednesday occurred in a high school’s music hall. Flanked by her running mate, Tim Walz, Harris did her best Michael Scott impersonation and served up one of her infamous word salads about the finer points of team building. As usual, it’s not just what she says, but the way she says it that makes the whole thing so entertaining.

HARRIS: But our country is counting on you. All of you. You are leaders just by being all in your room, doing what you do at this incredible school, and doing it as a massive team, and understanding all the pieces that fit together to make a team.

There are always two signs that Harris is about to impart some knowledge. First, she starts speaking as if she were addressing a kindergarten class, at a snail-paced and deliberate pace. Then it’s time to get her arms moving. The more she waves her arms around in massive, sweeping movements, the more she tries to fill space and sound astute, while achieving only the former.

I mean, what is she even saying? How can every student in the room be a leader just by being there? That’s not how leadership works at all. In fact, the whole point of a team is for people to fill different roles, and only a select few are leaders. But it sounded good in her head.

My favorite part of the clip, however, isn’t what comes out of Harris’ mouth. Instead, I see Walz start nodding vigorously at the end, as if she’d just delivered a revelation from on high. You have to give him credit for that. He may be a notorious liar who’s acquired bravado, but he’s got the lapdog thing down pat.

That’s why Harris’ campaign is doing its best to wrap her in bubble wrap and tie her to the teleprompter. That’s why she hasn’t given a single interview or press conference since being named the presumptive nominee in overdue July. Every time she deviates from the script, she just seems weird, awkward and inauthentic. Republicans must hope that reality hits previously disengaged voters before it’s too overdue.
