Some Democrats in West Virginia believe the national party’s renewed momentum and the excitement surrounding the presidential race could help them vote as they seek to win a complex election in this red state.

On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, called Her running mate is Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Walz, 60, is also a two-term congressman and has championed paid family and medical leave, free school meals and the legalization of recreational marijuana. He used to work as a social studies teacher.

Since President Joe Biden stepped down as the likely Democratic presidential nominee last month, there has been a Mood change in the national Democratic election campaign, as Harris has taken his place at the top of the electoral list.

Pam Cline said the high energy had trickled down to Nicholas County, where it was Chairwoman of the District Democratic Executive Committee. She is We are working to register and energize voters in a red district where voters will decide seats in the state House of Representatives, county commission and other areas in November.

“This will help tremendously in the upcoming elections,” said Cline, 63. “It will attract voters.”

Maria Russo

Maria Russo is a 29-year-old Democrat who is running for the House of Representatives in the 100th district of the Eastern Pandhandle, where sheIncumbent Republican Del. Bill Ridenour (R-Jefferson) in the November general election.

In a state with the lowest female quota Russo, who sits in the state legislature, hopes Harris and Walz’s turnout will give her campaign a boost.

“I have definitely seen a change in the last few weeks since Kamala Harris entered her presidential bid,” said Russo, who lives in Shepherdstown and is Clean Water Campaign Coordinator for the West Virginia Rivers Coalition. “Especially as a candidate, this is a time when there is great excitement about the changes that now lie ahead.”

Democrats running for local and statewide seats still face an uphill battle in West Virginia. In the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump won nearly 70 percent of the state’s presidential vote

As of July 31, there were more Republicans registered in West Virginia than Democrats, according to the Office of the Secretary of State.

In the race for governor, Democrat Steve Williams, mayor of Huntington, was far exceeded by Republican candidate and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, according to the latest campaign finance reports.

Former Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott is the Democratic candidate running against Republican Gov. Jim Justice for the congressional seat currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin (IW.Va.). On Tuesday, Elliott said he and his campaign team have spoken to nearly 2,000 people in 37 West Virginia counties so far as part of his plan to campaign in all 55 counties by Labor Day.

He noted that support for Trump is “pretty well entrenched” throughout West Virginia.

“Not a single voter has told me about Vice President Harris since she ran,” Elliott said.

However, he said Harris could have a positive influence on Democrats in elections like his, where the lower ranks of the candidate list are lower.

“For me, Governor Justice is a much more vulnerable candidate than [Trump] is for the voters of West Virginia,” Elliott said. “I think he has a certain popular appeal and people like his folksiness, they like his dog, but when you actually talk to them about the real issues, when you talk about his record, when you look at his failed business dealings, I think I have a lot of opportunities in my campaign to prove that he’s not the best person to represent West Virginia on a national level.”

The Greenbrier Hotel, one of the largest assets of the Justice family business empire, to be auctioned this month after the companies defaulted on a loan. The governor last week called the foreclosure “another political ploy by the Democrats.” A lawyer representing Justice assured that the resort will not be sold and that the company will ensure there is no negative impact on its ownership or operations of Greenbrier.

The foreclosure was the latest in a series of financial troubles for the governor’s family businesses. It came after the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against Justice and his coal mining companies for failing to pay $5 million in health and safety penalties and the state tax agency filed liens against The Greenbrier for $3.5 million in unpaid sales tax, among other things.

“Clearly, [Justice] “He needs to spend some time running his own business before everything goes into foreclosure,” Elliott said.

Access to abortion is a central issue in the 2024 elections

Access to abortion is one of the central issues in this year’s presidential election campaign since the Supreme Court of the United States Dobbs v. Jackson – Women’s Health Organization Decision that put abortion restrictions and bans in place across the country.

Harris supports Abortion rights and links the problem to the increasing maternal mortality rate.

In West Virginia, a state with a near-total ban on abortion, Cline said the issue had spurred some Republican women in her part of the state to support Harris.

Last week, a cardboard cutout of Harris was on display at the Democratic booth in Nicholas County at a local festival. Kline said women, including Republicans, “bombarded” the tent to take a photo with the cutout and pledge their support for the Democratic candidates.

“Many women understand that this is about women’s health care,” Cline said. “We’re going to try to really engage women.”

Russo emphasized: “We must be represented in all rooms where decisions are made about us.”

Earlier this year, Williams launched a petition asking the Attorney General to put abortion access on the agenda of a special session of the House. He said the governor and lawmakers “should listen to Trump and let the people decide by putting this issue on the ballot in November.”

The West Virginia Democratic Party endorsed Walz as Harris’ choice for vice president and praised his commitment to Education, healthcare and economic growth.

“Tim Walz’s proven ability to bring people together and address pressing problems with practical solutions is a perfect fit with the values we hold dear in West Virginia. I am confident that his partnership on the ballot will bring a new sense of hope and progress to our country,” said Party chairman Del. Mike Pushkin, D-Kanawha, said in a statement.

Manchin, now registered as an independent who has served as a Democrat for decades has publicly given his support also behind Walz.
